VISUAL PERCEPTUAL DIFFICULTIES – A BRIEF OVERVIEW

Perceptual Problems
This is the name given to a group of symptoms caused by malfunctions in the eye/brain communication chain. It is estimated that up to 10% of children may suffer from the disorder to varying degrees.

A person with problems such as dyslexia may experience a range of symptoms from reading problems to major difficulties. They will often underachieve in academic work or in social environments, self esteem is lowered, anti-social behavior is common and the sufferer can even exhibit neurological symptoms. Symptoms are often unrecognized (even in the normal ‘eye test’) and are common in the school classroom.

Latest research suggests that ALL children or adults who are underachieving must be fully assessed for visual perceptual problems, as well as having an eye examination.

You will be pleased to know that assessment and treatment are available NOW. Early intervention can make a difference to the rest of your child’s life.

Migraines and Headaches
Perceptual problems often result in headaches, migraine, dry eyes and many other conditions. Immediate relief is possible using Orthoscopics System. The headache will often disappear before the tests are completed- it can be that dramatic. The treatments are simple and often work out a lot less costly than pharmaceutical products. THE STEPS YOU SHOULD TAKE
Parents
Ask your child’s school whether they have anyone trained to undertake a visual perception screening. They will undertake a series of screening tests and, if necessary, refer you.

If the school does not have a trained specialist in visual dyslexia then you should ask us for help. We will undertake either a screening or a full assessment in addition to the full eye examination.

An Orthoscopics visual assessment is only available through trained optical professionals and we provide this exclusively for South Wales.

There may be provision for payment of the fees incurred form your school or LEA or other sources. Ask for advice.

HEALTH AND SAFETY AND VDU TESTS
If you are in employment, your employer may have to pay or assist with the costs. Ask for details.

THE VISUAL PROCESSING ASSESSMENT
An initial eye examination is required. Then you will be asked detailed questions about your visual perception and other matters. Some tests will be undertaken to determine how your eyes change with stimulus etc. A substantial report can be generated to enable you to get the most appropriate perceptual treatment.

The optician will advise you on the most appropriate course of action. Including the eye examination, you will be at the opticians clinic for at least an hour.

Often astonishing results are reported during the tests, improved vision, hearing and balance being quite common. The tests are in no way unpleasant and are suitable for all from the age of about seven years.
